It’s that time of year again. No doubt you have already seen five different adverts telling you how to lose weight after the festive season, making you feel guilty for any extra food or alcohol and convincing you that you need to lose at least 10 lbs in January.

What if you could get off the New Year’s resolution treadmill and choose positive changes that will help you get pregnant AND are easy to stick to?

Every year, I make New Year’s resolutions and, like 92% of the population, I fail. I normally forget I’ve even made a New Year’s resolution by the 15th January, so I’ve got no hope really. I always pick lose weight or get fit (losing weight in disguise) but yet here I am, 32 and still overweight.

I *know* how to eat and exercise healthy so why can’t I stick to this resolution or any other weight loss attempt from the past 20 years?

It’s not your fault your New Year’s resolution fails. Are you ready to try something different?

Your brain is a funny old thing. It hates change and will do anything in its power to avoid it at all costs. It makes sense, really, you’ve stayed alive so far doing what you’re doing, so why risk changing it?

This means that all the well-meaning New Year’s resolutions are doomed from the start. Whenever you step outside your comfort zone, whether that’s going to the gym, starting a new diet or giving up alcohol, the further away that is from your normal, the harder it will be to sustain.

So what can you do to make a real, lasting positive change?

The answer is the very unglamorous and very unsexy micro-steps. Smaller than baby steps, tinier than tiny steps, micro-steps are so small that you may think I’m mad when I tell you that this is how to make a positive step in the direction to getting pregnant.

How can these micro-steps make a difference?

Micro-steps are so stupidly small that they take very little willpower to do. If you want to increase that amount of water you drink, your step is to drink one glass of water. If you want to exercise every day, your step is to put on your work our clothes. Although these steps are small, you will gain a sense of satisfaction from completing them and may even want to drink more water or do a yoga video (but don’t make that your goal!).

The secret is to do them every day without fail. Over time these tiny wins not only boost your mood from reaching your goals every day but they make strong lasting habits, which will create a positive lifestyle change.
